Charlie
Wood was considered for nomination for Best Contemporary
Jazz Performance
in the 39th annual Grammy Awards. He ranked
within a list
of Jazz Greats such as Doc Powel, David Sanborn, Tom Scott,
Grover Washington Jr., and others. 39th Grammy
Awards.
Jim
Beal Jr. - San Antonio Express News
Wood,
from San Antonio and Bulverde, turned pro at 14. He made a
considerable mark as a country guitar player, picking with
the house band at the fabled Gilley's nightspot in
Pasadena
behind Mickey Gilley, Johnny Lee, Carroll Gilley, Johnny
Gimble
and others. Wood worked extensively in this area with
Geronimo
Treviño.
A
few years ago, Wood, who has the unique ability to blend
his
guitar with a wide variety of players and singers, turned
to his own music - a smooth brand of jazz that fits
comfortably
alongside the likes of Wes Montgomery and George
Benson.
His
new album, "In the Thick of the Woods,"
on Augie
Meyers'
White Boy label, features nine Wood
compositions and
a reworking of Herbie Hancock's
"Watermelon."
For
the release party, Wood will be joined by two players on
the
album - drummer Louis Coronado and keyboardist Joe
Mares.
"In
the Thick of the Woods" is slick and smooth, but
doesn't
sacrifice soul and passion. Engineered by Clay Meyers and
produced by Wood and Meyers, it features warm, beautiful
sounds
that include touches of Latin, reggae and
straight
jazz.
Wood
is an excellent technical player. But, where other jazz
players
on the smooth side seem to be flogging a formula while
being
content to let their technical skills override their
emotions,
Wood is able to infuse his tunes with power and
personality.
"In the Thick of the Woods" has even
garnered airplay
on local commercial-radio jazz
programs. |

Texas
Music Association - SA Notes (May 1996)
Charlie,
with his band "Third Stream," just
released his
first album entitled "IN THE THICK OF THE
WOODS."
His style is Jazz, which he coolly weaves into a variety
of sounds and feels including Latin, new
age, and even a
touch of country! Nine out of ten tracks on the album...
ALL instrumental... are original. The album was
co-produced
and engineered by Clay Meyers (Augie's son). Clay
also played
drums for the album, which was recorded at C.A. M.
Recording
Studio in Buiverde. Charlie is highly complimentary of
Clay,
saying that he put his heart and soul into the project.
Other musicians on the album are Gage Becker on bass,
Louis
Coronado on percussion, and Jo Jo Mares on keyboards.
Charlie
plays in town at La Madeleine, Bella Cucina, and at
Tex's
Sport Bar (Airport Hilton). Don't miss this wonderful
album
and entertainer who so freely shares his
soul's
music, letting
us create our own lyrics in our hearts! Call 496-6371 for
information on the album or future
performances.

Charlie
is presently working on his second CD
"Rhythms
of the Eclipse." This new release recorded
at
Studio Cats, engineered by Robert Ybarra, produced
by Charlie and his keyboard player, Oscar Cruz,
will
definitely show
his growth and progress as he
branches
out and reveals more of his creative musical
skills.
His persistence and determination have enabled
Charlie
to receive endorsements from Epiphone Guitars, a
division
of Gibson Musical Instruments, J. D'Addario
Company,
Inc., and Dunlop Picks.
